AI Overviews
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, combining a written answer with links to the web pages used as sources.
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated answer summaries that appear above the regular results for some queries. Each overview gives a short written answer, built with Gemini, and links to the web pages it drew from. Google launched the feature broadly in the US in May 2024 after testing it as the Search Generative Experience.
How it works
When Google decides a query benefits from a synthesized answer, it retrieves relevant pages from its index, generates a summary and attaches supporting links. Key points for site owners:
- Same index, same eligibility. Per Google’s AI features documentation, there are no special technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
- Supporting links are not always the top 10. Overviews can cite pages that rank lower for the main query, because Google may run related sub-queries (see query fan-out).
- Reporting is merged. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are counted in Search Console’s Performance report alongside regular web results, not in a separate filter.
AI Overviews tend to appear on informational and comparison queries, and less often on navigational ones.
Examples
- A search for “what is zero trust network access” shows an overview defining ZTNA, with links to a vendor explainer, a standards body page and an analyst blog.
- A query like “best way to rotate API keys” returns a step list summarizing several documentation pages.
- A B2B SaaS team sees impressions rise but clicks fall on a definitional page after an overview starts answering the query directly.
How to apply it
- Identify which of your target queries trigger an AI Overview.
- Put a concise, quotable answer directly under the relevant heading.
- Cover the follow-up questions the overview tends to include.
- Keep the page indexable and avoid blocking snippets unless you mean to.
- Track whether your domain is a supporting link, not just your rank.

Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google says standard snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet apply to AI features in Search. Using them also limits how your page appears in regular snippets.
Do AI Overviews use a separate crawler?
No. Google states AI Overviews draw on its normal Search index, so a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be shown as a supporting link.
Are AI Overviews the same as AI Mode?
No. AI Overviews appear on the standard results page for some queries. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience with longer answers and follow-up questions.
