AI Citation
An AI citation is a link or source reference to a specific web page that an AI engine includes in its answer to show where information came from, such as a footnote in Perplexity.
What is an AI Citation?
An AI citation is a reference from an AI-generated answer to a specific source page, usually shown as a numbered footnote, inline link or source card. It tells the user where a claim came from. For publishers and brands, being cited means the engine selected your page as evidence for its answer.
How it works
Engines that retrieve live web content follow roughly the same path:
flowchart LR
A[Prompt] --> B[Search and retrieve pages]
B --> C[Select passages]
C --> D[Generate answer]
D --> E[Attach source links]
Pages that get cited tend to rank or be indexed for the sub-queries the engine runs, load cleanly for its crawler, and contain a passage that directly supports a sentence in the answer. Clear definitions, specific facts, tables and dated information are easier to attribute than broad marketing copy.
Citation display varies. Perplexity numbers its sources, Google AI Overviews show link cards beside the summary, and ChatGPT search shows inline source chips. Read more on how AI engines cite.
Examples
- Perplexity answers “what is SBOM” and cites a government guidance page, a vendor glossary entry and a standards document.
- Google AI Overviews for “how to set up DKIM” cite a hosting provider’s help article as the step-by-step source.
- A B2B SaaS company is cited for “SOC 2 Type II vs Type I” because its explainer has a clean comparison table.
Citations also vary by engine and over time. The same prompt can cite different pages from one week to the next, so a single check is a snapshot, not a verdict. Tracking repeated runs shows which pages are cited consistently and which only appear occasionally. Pages cited consistently are your strongest AI assets and deserve regular updates.
How to apply it
- Find the prompts where competitors are cited and you are not.
- Write a passage on your page that answers the exact question in two or three sentences.
- Support claims with specifics and outbound sources.
- Keep pages indexable and accessible to AI crawlers.
- Track citations per URL, not just per domain, to see which pages earn them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a citation and a mention?
A mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text. A citation is a link to a specific URL used as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being named in the text.
Do all AI engines show citations?
Engines that search the web at answer time, such as Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, usually show sources. Answers generated from model memory alone often show none.
Do AI citations send traffic?
Some do. Click-through from citations is typically lower than from a top organic result, but visitors who click tend to have high intent.
