Citation Rate
Citation rate is the percentage of tracked AI answers that link to a brand's own pages as a source, measured across a defined set of prompts and AI engines over a set period.
What is Citation Rate?
Citation rate is the share of AI-generated answers that cite your own website as a source. If you track 200 answers and 30 of them link to one of your pages, your citation rate is 15 percent. It shows whether AI engines treat your content as evidence, not just whether they know your name.
How it works
Citation rate sits alongside mention rate in most AI visibility reporting:
| Metric | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | Does the answer name us? |
| Citation rate | Does the answer link to our pages? |
| Share of voice | How do we compare with competitors? |
A brand can have high mentions and low citations (well known, but other sites explain it better), or the reverse (its docs are cited, but the answer names a competitor). Looking at both points to different fixes: citations are mostly a content and technical problem, mentions are often a reputation and distribution problem.
Citation rate only applies to engines that show sources. Answers generated without retrieval have no citations to count, so keep those engines in a separate view.
Examples
- A cloud security vendor finds its citation rate is high for definition prompts (its glossary is cited) and near zero for comparison prompts.
- A DevTools company raises its citation rate on integration prompts after publishing one page per integration with setup steps.
- An agency reports citation rate per URL to show which client pages engines rely on.
How to apply it
- Track citations at URL level and group them by page type.
- Compare your cited pages with competitors’ cited pages for the same prompts.
- Improve pages that rank in search but are not cited: add direct answers, tables and current facts.
- Check that AI crawlers can fetch the page and that key content is in the HTML.
- Review the trend monthly rather than reacting to single runs.

Frequently asked questions
How is citation rate calculated?
Divide the number of tracked answers that cite at least one of your URLs by the total number of tracked answers, then multiply by 100. Calculate it per engine and per prompt group.
Why is my mention rate higher than my citation rate?
Models may know your brand from training data or third-party pages but prefer other sites as evidence. That usually points to a gap in your own pages' clarity, depth or crawlability for those questions.
Does citation rate include third-party pages about my brand?
Usually not. Citation rate typically counts your own domains. Third-party citations that mention you are tracked separately as cited sources.
