AI Crawler
An AI crawler is a bot run by an AI company that fetches web pages to train models, build a search index for AI answers, or retrieve content live when a user asks a question.
What is an AI Crawler?
An AI crawler is an automated bot operated by an AI company to fetch web content. Depending on the bot, the content is used to train language models, to build an index that AI search answers draw from, or to retrieve a specific page in real time for a user’s prompt. Examples include GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
How it works
AI crawlers fall into three broad groups:
| Type | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Training | Collects content for model training | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot |
| Search indexing | Builds an index for AI search answers | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot |
| User-triggered | Fetches a page when a user asks | ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User |
Each identifies itself with a user agent you can target in robots.txt. Some controls are tokens rather than separate bots: Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended let you opt out of AI training use while the regular crawler keeps indexing for search. Check each provider’s documentation, because names and behavior change.
Why it matters for AI search
If an AI crawler cannot fetch a page, that page cannot be cited by the engine it serves. Common accidental blocks include CDN bot-protection rules, WAF challenges, rate limits and content that only loads through JavaScript. Many AI crawlers fetch raw HTML, so server-rendered content is safer.
Examples
- A B2B SaaS team finds that its bot-management setting challenges PerplexityBot, so its pages never appear as Perplexity sources.
- A docs site renders content client-side; AI crawlers see an empty shell, and assistants cite a third-party tutorial instead.
- A company allows search-indexing bots but blocks training bots for its gated research reports.
How to apply it
- List the AI crawlers that matter for the engines your buyers use.
- Review robots.txt rules for each user agent.
- Check server or CDN logs to confirm successful fetches (status 200).
- Ensure key content is present in the initial HTML.
- Decide training access and search access as separate policies.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI crawlers should I know about?
Common ones include OpenAI's GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, Anthropic's ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Common Crawl's CCBot and Apple's Applebot. Google uses the Google-Extended token to control Gemini training use.
Do AI crawlers render JavaScript?
Many fetch raw HTML and may not execute JavaScript fully. Key content that only appears after client-side rendering may be missed.
Will blocking AI crawlers hurt my Google rankings?
Blocking AI-specific crawlers does not affect Googlebot. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
