Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google Search that answers complex questions with longer AI-generated responses, follow-up questions and links to source pages.
What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search that uses a custom Gemini model to answer longer, multi-part questions. It returns a written response with inline links to sources and lets users ask follow-ups. Google introduced it as a Labs experiment in March 2025 and expanded it to all US users in May 2025.
How it works
AI Mode relies on a technique Google calls query fan-out. It breaks a question into subtopics, runs many related searches at once, then synthesizes the results into one answer. This has a few consequences:
- Wider source pool. Pages can be cited for a sub-question even if they do not rank for the original query.
- Conversation context. Follow-up questions inherit earlier context, so later answers may cite different sources than the first one.
- Fewer, more qualified clicks. Users often get enough from the answer itself; those who click tend to be looking for depth, a tool or a vendor.
Google’s guidance in its AI features documentation is that standard SEO best practices apply and no special markup is required.
Examples
- A user asks “compare SAST and DAST tools for a small engineering team and explain which to start with”. AI Mode runs searches on each tool type, pricing, team size and integration, then cites several vendor and review pages.
- A follow-up, “which of those integrate with GitHub Actions?”, pulls in documentation pages that were absent from the first answer.
- A DevTools vendor finds its integration docs cited in AI Mode even though its homepage does not rank for the head term.
How to apply it
- Map the sub-questions behind each important buyer query.
- Make sure each sub-question has a clear, crawlable answer on your site.
- Keep documentation, pricing and integration pages accurate and public.
- Monitor AI Mode separately from AI Overviews when you track visibility.
- Watch Search Console trends for impression and click shifts.

Frequently asked questions
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews add a short summary to the normal results page. AI Mode is a separate tab or experience built for multi-step questions, with longer answers and a chat-style follow-up flow.
Does AI Mode traffic show in Search Console?
Google has said AI Mode clicks and impressions are included in Search Console's Performance report totals, without a dedicated filter to separate them.
How do I optimize for AI Mode?
The same fundamentals apply as for Search: indexable pages, clear answers, depth on subtopics and strong authority. Covering likely sub-questions helps because AI Mode issues many related searches.
