Query Fan-Out

SEO, AEO & GEO Glossary

Query fan-out is a technique where an AI search engine splits one user question into many related sub-queries, searches them in parallel, then combines the results into a single answer.

What is Query Fan-Out?

Query fan-out is how AI search engines handle complex questions. The engine breaks the user’s prompt into multiple related sub-queries, runs those searches at the same time, then synthesizes the findings into one response. Google introduced the term publicly in 2025 when describing how AI Mode answers multi-part questions.

How it works

flowchart TD
  A["Prompt: best SIEM for a mid-size healthcare company"] --> B[SIEM features for healthcare]
  A --> C[HIPAA logging requirements]
  A --> D[SIEM pricing mid-market]
  A --> E[SIEM vendor comparisons]
  B --> F[Combined AI answer with citations]
  C --> F
  D --> F
  E --> F

Each sub-query retrieves its own set of pages. The final answer may cite a page that ranks for one sub-query but not for the original phrasing. This explains why AI answers often cite sources outside the top organic results for the main query.

  • Topical coverage beats single-keyword focus. A site that answers the surrounding questions has more entry points.
  • Specific pages win specific sub-queries. A dedicated page for “HIPAA logging requirements” can be cited inside a broader answer.
  • Rank tracking alone undercounts visibility. You need to check presence in the answer, not just position for the head term.

Examples

  • A user asks AI Mode to compare two container security tools for a startup. The answer cites one vendor’s pricing page, a review site and a third-party Kubernetes guide, each found by a different sub-query.
  • A B2B SaaS vendor is cited in an AI Overview for “how to choose a password manager for teams” through its page on SSO requirements, not its homepage.

Fan-out also makes internal linking and site structure more important. When related pages are clearly connected, engines and crawlers can find the full set of answers on your site, and each sub-question has a natural home. Thin pages that only repeat the head term rarely win any sub-query.

How to apply it

  1. For each priority topic, list the likely sub-questions (features, pricing, compliance, integrations, alternatives).
  2. Make sure each sub-question has a clear answer on a crawlable page.
  3. Link those pages together so the topic cluster is obvious.
  4. Track which of your URLs are cited for broad prompts.

Frequently asked questions

Which engines use query fan-out?

Google has described query fan-out as the technique behind AI Mode and AI Overviews. Other AI search tools that run multiple searches per prompt, such as deep research modes, follow a similar pattern.

Can I see the sub-queries an engine runs?

Not directly in most products. You can infer them by looking at which subtopics the answer covers and which pages it cites for each part.

How does fan-out change keyword research?

It rewards covering the related questions around a topic, not just the head keyword, because each sub-query is a separate chance to be retrieved and cited.
