Conversational Search

SEO, AEO & GEO Glossary

Conversational search is a search experience where users ask questions in natural language and refine them through follow-ups, with the system keeping context across the exchange.

Conversational search lets users search the way they talk. They ask a full question, get an answer, then ask follow-ups that build on the earlier context, much like a conversation with an expert. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode all work this way, and voice assistants were an early version.

How it works

Conversational search systems combine three capabilities:

  • Natural language understanding. The system interprets intent from long, context-rich questions rather than matching keywords.
  • Session memory. Follow-ups like “which of those support SSO?” are resolved against the previous answer.
  • Generated answers. A language model writes a response, often grounded on retrieved sources.

Google laid groundwork for this with updates such as Hummingbird and BERT, which improved understanding of natural-language queries. Large language models made multi-turn conversation practical at scale.

Each turn in a conversation is a new chance to be cited or recommended. A brand may be absent from the first answer but appear when the user narrows the question (“for a regulated industry”, “with a free tier”, “that integrates with Jira”). Content that addresses those specific constraints wins later turns.

Examples

  • A buyer asks “what are good vulnerability management tools?”, then “which work well for a small team?”, then “which have usage-based pricing?”. Each answer narrows the shortlist and may cite different sources.
  • A developer asks an assistant how to configure a library, then follows up with an error message. Clear troubleshooting docs are cited.
  • A marketing lead uses Google AI Mode to compare analytics platforms over several follow-ups.

Because each conversation is unique, measurement is harder than with keywords. Teams usually track a set of representative prompt chains and look at whether the brand enters the answer at the first, second or third turn.

How to apply it

  1. Collect real buyer questions from sales calls, support tickets and forums.
  2. Write pages that answer specific, constrained questions (by industry, team size, integration).
  3. Anticipate the next question and answer it on the same page or a linked one.
  4. Track multi-step prompt chains, not only single prompts.

Frequently asked questions

How do conversational queries differ from keywords?

They are longer, include context such as company size, stack or constraints, and often chain several questions. A keyword like 'SIEM pricing' becomes 'what does a SIEM cost for a 300-person company with a small SOC team?'

Does conversational search change content strategy?

Yes. Content needs to answer specific, contextual questions and the natural follow-ups, not just target a single head keyword.

Is voice search a form of conversational search?

Yes. Voice assistants were an early form. AI assistants and Google AI Mode extend it with multi-turn context and longer answers.
