Prompt Tracking
Prompt tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of buyer prompts in AI engines on a schedule and recording which brands are mentioned, cited and recommended in each answer.
What is Prompt Tracking?
Prompt tracking is the AI search equivalent of rank tracking. You define a list of prompts that real buyers would ask, run them regularly across AI engines, and record what each answer says: which brands appear, in what order, which pages are cited and how each brand is described.
How it works
- Build the prompt set. Write prompts the way people type into AI assistants, which is usually longer and more conversational than a keyword. Group them by intent, for example definitions, comparisons, best-of lists and pricing.
- Choose engines. Track the assistants and AI search surfaces your buyers use.
- Run and sample. Execute each prompt on a schedule, ideally several times, since answers are not deterministic.
- Extract signals. Pull out mentions, citations, answer position and sentiment.
- Report trends. Look at changes over weeks and months, by engine and by prompt group.
| Rank tracking | Prompt tracking |
|---|---|
| Keywords | Natural-language prompts |
| Position 1 to 100 | Mentioned, cited, position in answer |
| One results page | Many engines, variable answers |
Examples
- A data security vendor tracks prompts like “how do I find sensitive data in Snowflake” and “best DSPM tools” across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
- A DevTools company adds prompts from recent sales calls each quarter so the set reflects how buyers ask today.
- An agency tracks the same prompt set for a client and three competitors to show share of voice over time.
How to apply it
- Start with prompts tied to revenue: shortlists, comparisons and “alternatives to” questions.
- Keep a stable core set for trend lines and a rotating set for new topics.
- Record full answers so you can review wording, not just counts.
- Use the results to decide which pages to create or update.

Frequently asked questions
How many prompts should I track?
Enough to cover your main topics and buying stages. Small teams often start with a few dozen focused prompts and expand once they know which clusters matter.
Why run the same prompt more than once?
AI answers vary between runs. Sampling each prompt several times per period gives a more reliable picture than a single answer.
Where do prompt ideas come from?
Sales call notes, support tickets, search console queries, People Also Ask boxes, community forums and the questions prospects ask in demos.
