Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's 2023 Search Labs test of AI answers in results. It became AI Overviews, launched in the US in May 2024.
What is Search Generative Experience (SGE)?
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google’s experimental AI search feature that placed a generated summary, called an AI-powered snapshot, above traditional results, with links to supporting pages. Google announced it on May 10, 2023 as an opt-in test in Search Labs. In May 2024 the feature launched broadly as AI Overviews, and the SGE name was retired.
SGE was Google’s first large public test of generative answers inside Search, launched months after ChatGPT’s release had put pressure on traditional search. For SEO teams, it was the moment “how do we appear in the AI answer?” became a planning question. Many early AEO and GEO practices were first discussed under the SGE label.
How it works
SGE worked roughly as follows, based on Google’s announcements at the time:
- A Labs user entered a query in Google Search.
- If Google’s systems judged an AI answer useful, a generated snapshot appeared at the top, with source links shown alongside.
- Users could ask follow-up questions in a conversational mode, keeping context from the prior query.
- For shopping queries, the snapshot drew on Google’s Shopping Graph to summarize products and considerations.
At launch, SGE was available only in the US, in English, on Chrome desktop and in the Google app. Google positioned it explicitly as an early experiment, so its look, triggers and behavior changed often during the test.
From SEO to AEO and GEO
SGE was the bridge between featured snippets and today’s AI answers.
| Stage | Feature | What appeared on top |
|---|---|---|
| Classic SEO | Featured snippet | One extracted passage from one page |
| 2023 experiment | SGE snapshot | Generated summary with several sources |
| 2024 onward | AI Overviews, AI Mode | Generated answers, query fan-out, follow-ups |
Timeline worth knowing:
- May 10, 2023: SGE announced in Search Labs.
- May 14, 2024: Google announces AI Overviews rolling out to everyone in the US, noting the feature grew out of its Search Labs experiment.
- March 5, 2025: AI Mode introduced as a Labs experiment.
- May 20, 2025: AI Mode opened to all US users without a Labs sign-up.
What carried over from SGE: the principle that content must be indexed, eligible for snippets and helpful to be used. What changed: AI answers are now a default part of Search for many queries, not a niche experiment, and Google says no special optimization is needed beyond normal SEO.
What to do about it
- Update old playbooks. Search internal docs and agency reports for “SGE” and replace them with current AI Overviews and AI Mode guidance.
- Retire speculative tactics. Advice built on early SGE screenshots, such as specific snapshot layouts, is not reliable today.
- Track the current features. Measure presence in AI Overviews and AI Mode for your priority queries, plus other engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.
- Keep your glossary and content current. If your site has posts titled “How to optimize for SGE,” refresh or redirect them to current guidance.
Common mistakes
- Using SGE as a current product name. It signals outdated knowledge to readers and AI engines.
- Assuming SGE data predicts today. Studies run on the 2023 experiment measured a different, opt-in product.
- Confusing SGE with AI Mode. AI Mode is a separate, later experience, though both trace back to the same Labs work.

Frequently asked questions
Does SGE still exist?
Not under that name. SGE was the Search Labs experiment. Google rolled the core feature out to all US users as AI Overviews in May 2024 and later expanded it to many more countries. The more conversational, multi-step experience Google built next is AI Mode, introduced in Labs in March 2025 and opened to all US users in May 2025.
Was SGE available to everyone?
No. SGE required opting in through Search Labs. At launch it was limited to the US, in English, on Chrome desktop and the Google app for Android and iOS. Google expanded the experiment to some other countries during 2023 before replacing it with AI Overviews.
Is advice written for SGE still valid?
Partly. Guidance about crawlable, helpful, answer-first content still applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Claims about SGE-specific layouts, snapshot formats or ranking factors are outdated, and some were speculative even at the time. Check current Google Search Central documentation instead.
