Prompt Volume

SEO, AEO & GEO Glossary

Prompt volume estimates how often people ask AI assistants about a topic or prompt in a period. Vendors model it from panel data; AI platforms do not report it.

What is Prompt Volume?

Prompt volume is an estimate of how many times people ask AI assistants about a given prompt or topic over a period, usually a month. It is the AI-search counterpart of keyword search volume. Because AI platforms do not publish usage data at the query level, every prompt volume figure is modeled by a third-party vendor, and methods vary.

The metric emerged as AI visibility tools matured. Profound announced a Prompt Volumes feature in December 2024, and other tools, including Semrush, Peec AI and Writesonic, have since published their own volume or demand estimates. Some report an estimated count; others use a relative score. Peec AI, for example, scores demand from 1 to 5 relative to an industry.

How it works

Vendors combine some of the following inputs:

  • Clickstream panels. Opt-in browser data showing visits to AI assistants and, in some cases, prompt text.
  • AI conversation datasets. Collections of real prompts used to model frequency and phrasing.
  • Search engine signals. Keyword volumes and trends mapped to related prompts.
  • Topic grouping. Because prompts are long and varied, similar prompts are clustered into topics, and volume is reported per topic.
  • Modeling. Statistical or machine learning models extrapolate from samples to estimated totals.

The result is an estimate with unknown error. Critics, including other vendors, argue that clickstream panels are small relative to AI usage and skew toward desktop browsers, missing mobile apps and other access points. DemandSphere, for example, has called much of this “just clickstream data” with small panels.

From SEO to AEO and GEO

Keyword search volume has been a planning metric for two decades, sourced from search engines’ own data through tools such as Google Ads Keyword Planner. It was imperfect, rounded into ranges for many accounts, but it came from the platform.

Keyword search volumePrompt volume
From search engine dataModeled by third parties
Short, repeated queriesLong, varied, multi-turn prompts
Reported per keywordUsually reported per topic

What carries over: the job of prioritizing topics by demand. What changed: the data source and its reliability. Prompts also include context (“we are a 300-person fintech using AWS”) that makes exact-match counting meaningless, which is why topic-level grouping is the norm.

What to do about it

  1. Use it relatively. Compare topics within one tool to rank priorities; avoid quoting absolute numbers in plans.
  2. Triangulate. Check against keyword volumes, Google Trends, sales call themes and support tickets.
  3. Build your prompt set from buyers first, then use volume estimates to weight it.
  4. Track visibility, not just demand. A low-volume prompt that decides a six-figure deal can matter more than a popular informational one. Measurement platforms such as GrackerAI track how your brand appears for chosen prompts across up to 10 AI engines; volume tells you which prompts to choose.
  5. Re-check quarterly, since vendor models and AI usage both shift.

Common mistakes

  • Treating estimates as facts in board reports.
  • Comparing numbers across vendors with different methods.
  • Ignoring niche B2B prompts because panels show little volume for them.

Frequently asked questions

Where does prompt volume data come from?

From third-party estimates. Vendors model it from sources such as opt-in clickstream panels, datasets of AI conversations, search engine trends and their own models. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Perplexity do not publish prompt-level volumes the way Google Ads Keyword Planner provides keyword ranges.

How accurate is prompt volume?

Accuracy is hard to judge because vendors cannot validate against the platforms' real logs. Critics point out that clickstream panels are small relative to AI usage, skew toward desktop browsers and miss mobile apps. Treat numbers as directional and compare topics within one tool rather than across tools.

Is prompt volume the same as search volume?

No. Search volume counts short typed queries on search engines and comes from engine data such as Google Ads. Prompts are longer, conversational and often multi-turn, so the same need can be phrased in many ways. Most tools group similar prompts into topics and report volume at the topic level.
