Agentic Commerce
Agentic commerce is buying and selling where AI agents discover, compare and purchase products or services for a user, using protocols such as ACP, AP2 and UCP.
What is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is a model of buying and selling in which AI agents discover, compare and purchase products or services on a user’s behalf, within limits the user sets. Instead of a shopper browsing and checking out, an assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode handles some or all steps, using merchant feeds and agent payment protocols.
The term spread in 2025 as major platforms announced agent checkout features and open protocols. OpenAI and Stripe introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, in September 2025. Google announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) on September 16, 2025, and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with retail partners in January 2026. Card networks and payment providers have launched their own agent programs.
How it works
A typical agentic purchase looks like this:
- Intent. The user asks, for example, “Order replacement YubiKeys for our five new hires, under $300 total.”
- Discovery. The agent searches product feeds and the web, compares options and checks reviews.
- Authorization. The user approves the cart, or pre-authorizes rules such as price limits. AP2 formalizes this with signed “mandates”: an Intent Mandate for the instructions and a Cart Mandate for the exact items and price.
- Checkout. The agent passes order and payment details to the merchant through a protocol such as ACP or UCP, without exposing raw card data. The merchant stays the merchant of record.
- Fulfillment. The merchant ships and handles support as usual.
| Protocol | Led by | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| ACP | Stripe, OpenAI | Agent-ready checkout for merchants |
| AP2 | Google and partners | Payment authorization and accountability |
| UCP | Google and retail partners | Full commerce flow in AI Mode and Gemini |
From SEO to AEO and GEO
Classic ecommerce SEO aimed to rank product and category pages so shoppers would click and buy on your site. AEO and GEO aim to be named in AI answers. Agentic commerce adds a third step: being selectable and purchasable by the agent itself, often without a visit to your site.
What carries over: accurate product data, good reviews, clear pricing and structured data such as Product schema and merchant feeds. What changed: product feeds and protocol integrations become as important as pages, and the “conversion” may happen inside the assistant. Reporting and attribution also shift, because the click path disappears.
What to do about it
For B2B SaaS and cybersecurity vendors, the practical steps today are mostly about discovery:
- Publish complete, public plan facts. Seat limits, usage caps, trial terms and pricing model, in HTML tables.
- Keep listings consistent. Marketplace pages (cloud marketplaces, review sites) and your site should agree.
- Watch the protocols. If you sell self-serve plans or hardware, track ACP and UCP merchant programs and your payment provider’s agent support.
- Prepare for agent sign-ups. Review how your trial flow behaves if an assistant initiates it, including fraud controls.
- Measure assistant-driven demand. Ask “How did you find us?” in onboarding and log AI assistant answers.
Common mistakes
- Believing inflated forecasts. Many market-size numbers come from vendors with something to sell.
- Building for one platform. Protocols are competing; integrations through your payment provider can reduce lock-in.
- Hiding key facts behind sales calls. Agents cannot attend demos.

Frequently asked questions
What protocols power agentic commerce?
The main ones are the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an Apache 2.0 open standard developed by Stripe and OpenAI; Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), announced in September 2025 to handle authorization and accountability for agent payments; and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced in January 2026 for checkout in AI Mode and Gemini. They overlap and partly compete.
Does agentic commerce matter for B2B SaaS?
Less directly than for retail today, since most B2B purchases involve demos, procurement and contracts. But the discovery and comparison stage already happens in AI assistants, and self-serve SaaS plans are candidates for agent-initiated sign-ups. Clear public pricing and plan facts help agents shortlist you.
Is agentic commerce widely used yet?
Adoption is early and uneven. Features have launched in limited regions and categories, and reports in early 2026 indicated OpenAI scaled back its in-chat Instant Checkout in favor of merchant-run checkout. Independent, reliable usage data is scarce, so be skeptical of large market-size claims.
