Google's AI-Driven Ads and Agentic Commerce Revolutionize Marketing

TL;DR

  • Google is fundamentally reinventing advertising and commerce with AI-driven agentic experiences. This includes AI Mode in Search with new ad formats and a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for seamless transactions. The updates also introduce 'Direct Offers' for advertisers and AI-powered customer experience tools, transforming how brands connect with shoppers across platforms like YouTube.

Google Reinvents Ads with AI-Driven Agentic Commerce

Google is redefining advertising by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the shopping experience and streamline disjointed customer journeys. Vidhya Srinivasan, VP and GM of Ads & Commerce at Google, emphasizes the importance of AI in transforming search and commerce.

"We aren't just bringing ads to AI experiences in Search; we are reinventing what an ad is,” Srinivasan stated in a blog post.

AI-Powered Search and Advertising Formats

Google is evolving search into a tool that blends inspiration and information through AI. AI Mode allows businesses to participate in relevant conversations, offering new advertising formats that highlight organic shopping recommendations tailored to user queries. Google is testing formats displaying sponsored retailers, making it easier for shoppers to find relevant buying options. These formats are expanding beyond retail to include travel and other services.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

To facilitate seamless and secure agentic commerce, Google is developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This protocol standardizes how businesses connect with AI agents across the shopping journey, focusing on secure digital identity and payments. UCP-powered checkout is rolling out in the U.S., initially supporting Etsy and Wayfair in AI Mode within Search and the Gemini app, with plans to include Shopify, Target, and Walmart.

Google says UCP will "soon power a new checkout feature on eligible Google product listings in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app,” allowing users to complete purchases directly within the chat interface.

Direct Offers in AI Mode

Google's "Direct Offers" pilot program introduces paid aids into AI Mode, utilizing promotional deals from existing Shopping or Performance Max campaigns. Ginny Marvin, Google Ads product liaison, clarified that Direct Offers complement existing strategies, act on real-time intent, and maintain full advertiser control. These offers are displayed alongside AI chat based on context and perceived purchase intent.

Google says it is working with select retailers to refine the technology “into a faster, smarter way to help retailers connect with the next generation of shoppers.”

Business Agent and Gemini Enterprise for CX

Google also announced new merchant-side tools, including Business Agent, a customizable chat assistant for Google Business Profiles, and Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience (CX), which integrates AI into retailer websites and support channels.

YouTube Integration

YouTube is also part of this shift, transitioning from a brand awareness platform to a commerce model where AI agents manage transactions from discovery to checkout. The focus is on building stronger connections between brands and creators, using AI to match brands with creator communities for real business impact.
