Topical Authority
Topical authority is the perceived depth and trustworthiness of a site on a subject, earned by covering it thoroughly and being cited by others on it.
What is Topical Authority?
Topical authority is the degree to which search engines and AI systems treat a website as a reliable, expert source on a specific subject. It is earned by covering the subject thoroughly across related pages, linking them logically, and being referenced by other credible sources on the same topic. It applies to a whole topic rather than single keywords.
The phrase became popular in SEO in the late 2010s and early 2020s alongside semantic search and E-E-A-T. Google itself uses “topic authority” for a specific system: in May 2023 it explained how it identifies expert and local publications for specialized news queries. Ahrefs notes that Google has never published a formal specification of topical authority for general search, so the broader concept is a practitioner model rather than a confirmed metric.
How it works
No public formula exists, but the commonly cited ingredients are:
- Coverage depth. Pages addressing the core topic and its subtopics, from definitions to advanced how-tos and comparisons.
- Structure. A hub page with supporting pages, connected by descriptive internal links, often called topic clusters or content siloing.
- Focus. A site that consistently publishes on a defined subject, rather than everything.
- External recognition. Links and mentions from relevant sites, and citations of your original research.
- Expertise signals. Named authors with real credentials, accurate facts and updated content, consistent with E-E-A-T.
Google’s news topic authority post names similar signals for publishers: notability for a topic or location, influence and original reporting cited by others, and a reputation for high-quality work.
From SEO to AEO and GEO
In classic SEO, topical authority was a strategy for ranking many related keywords by owning a subject instead of chasing pages one at a time. In AEO and GEO, the same idea matters for two reasons. First, AI answers are retrieved from pages that rank, so broad, deep coverage puts more of your passages in the candidate pool when an engine fans a prompt out into sub-questions. Second, models learn which brands are associated with which topics from repeated mentions across the web.
What carries over: clusters, internal linking, expert authorship and earned links. What changed: authority now shows up as being named in answers (“leading API security vendors include…”), so third-party mentions and co-citation with category peers carry more weight than before.
What to do about it
- Define your topics narrowly. A cybersecurity vendor might choose “cloud security posture management” rather than “cloud security.”
- Map subtopics. Use keyword research, People Also Ask and buyer interviews to list every question in the topic.
- Build hubs and spokes. One comprehensive hub, then supporting pages, all interlinked with descriptive anchors.
- Publish original material. Benchmarks, research and expert commentary that others cite.
- Prune and consolidate. Merge thin or overlapping pages that dilute focus.
- Check AI answers by topic. Track whether you are named for category prompts, not just branded ones.
Common mistakes
- Publishing volume without depth. Many shallow posts do not equal authority.
- Drifting off-topic. Unrelated content for traffic can blur what your site is known for.
- Treating third-party “topical authority scores” as Google metrics. They are tool vendors’ estimates.

Frequently asked questions
Is topical authority a Google ranking factor?
Not as a single published metric. Google documented a 'topic authority' system in May 2023 that helps surface expert publications for news queries in specialized areas, using signals such as notability, original reporting cited by others and reputation. For non-news search, topical authority is an industry concept describing the combined effect of relevance, depth, links and E-E-A-T.
How long does it take to build topical authority?
There is no fixed timeline. It depends on competition, how much useful content you publish, how well it is linked internally and whether credible sites reference you. Narrow, focused topics can show results faster than broad, competitive ones. Treat it as a quarters-long program, not a campaign.
Does topical authority help with AI search?
Very likely, though no AI vendor publishes a formal metric. AI engines retrieve from pages that rank and are corroborated, and models learn associations between brands and topics from repeated mentions. A site that covers a subject comprehensively and is cited by others on it gives both retrieval and model memory more to work with.
