AI Hallucination
An AI hallucination is a confident but false or unsupported statement generated by an AI model, such as a wrong price, a feature a product lacks or a citation that does not exist.
What is an AI Hallucination?
An AI hallucination is output from an AI model that sounds confident but is false, unsupported or invented. For brands, it often shows up as wrong pricing, features a product does not have, outdated leadership, made-up integrations or incorrect claims about compliance. The model is not lying; it is generating plausible text where its information is weak.
How it works
Hallucinations about a brand usually trace back to one of these causes:
- Thin information. Few clear sources exist, so the model guesses from patterns in similar companies.
- Conflicting information. Your site, review sites and old articles disagree, and the model mixes them.
- Outdated training data. The model learned facts before a knowledge cutoff and repeats them without checking.
- Misread sources. In grounded answers, the model may attribute a competitor’s feature to you or over-generalize a passage.
Why it matters for AI search
Buyers often take AI answers at face value during early research. A hallucinated “no SOC 2 report” or wrong pricing tier can remove a vendor from a shortlist before sales ever speaks to the buyer. Because the error appears inside a trusted answer, it can be more damaging than a bad review.
Examples
- An assistant states that a B2B SaaS security vendor “does not support on-premises deployment”, when it has offered that option for years.
- A DevTools company is described with a pricing model it retired, copied from an old comparison article.
- An answer cites a “study” from a vendor that never published one.
How to apply it
- Regularly ask major assistants factual questions about your company and products.
- Log each error, the engine, the prompt and any cited source.
- Publish clear, crawlable pages for facts that are often wrong (pricing model, deployment options, certifications, integrations).
- Correct or request updates to outdated third-party pages.
- Use consistent wording across your site, docs, listings and profiles.
- Re-test after model updates.

Frequently asked questions
Why do AI models hallucinate about brands?
Models generate likely-sounding text. When information is missing, inconsistent or outdated, they may fill the gap with plausible but wrong details, or blend facts from similar companies.
Can I report a hallucination to an AI provider?
Most assistants have feedback controls on answers. That helps, but the more reliable fix is correcting the sources the model learns from and retrieves.
Does grounding prevent hallucinations?
It reduces them by giving the model real sources, but models can still misread or over-generalize, so monitoring is still needed.
