LLM Optimization (LLMO)
LLM optimization (LLMO) is the practice of shaping how large language models understand, describe and recommend a brand, through owned content, third-party coverage and technical access.
What is LLM Optimization (LLMO)?
LLM optimization (LLMO) is the work of making sure large language models represent your brand accurately and favorably. It covers the content models learn from, the pages they retrieve at answer time, and the technical access their crawlers have. The goal is for assistants to know what you do, describe it correctly and recommend you for the right use cases.
How it works
An LLM’s view of a brand comes from two places:
| Source | What influences it | How fast it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Training data | Consistent descriptions across the web over time | Slow, at new model versions |
| Live retrieval | Pages the engine finds and cites today | Fast, as content and rankings change |
LLMO works on both. For training data, it focuses on consistent positioning across your site, documentation, reviews, directories, analyst coverage and community discussions. For retrieval, it applies AEO and GEO practices: crawlable pages, direct answers and clear entities.
Examples
- A B2B SaaS company finds that assistants call it a “monitoring tool” when it now sells a full platform. It updates its homepage, About page, directory listings and social profiles with the same one-line description.
- A cybersecurity vendor publishes a clear page listing its certifications after an assistant wrongly says it lacks SOC 2.
- A DevTools team adds llms.txt and keeps its docs public so coding assistants describe its API correctly.
LLMO is a long-term effort. Retrieval-based answers can improve within weeks of better content, while training-data answers may lag until the next model release, so teams track both and set expectations accordingly.
How to apply it
- Audit how major assistants describe your brand, products, pricing model and competitors.
- Write a canonical brand description and use it consistently everywhere.
- Fix factual errors at the source, on your site and on third-party pages.
- Allow reputable AI crawlers to access public content.
- Re-check answers after model updates.

Frequently asked questions
Is LLMO the same as GEO or AEO?
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. LLMO puts more emphasis on how models represent a brand, including in answers from training data with no live search.
Can you change what an LLM says about you?
Not directly. You can influence retrieved answers fairly quickly by improving the pages engines cite. Training-data answers change only when new model versions are trained on updated information.
What is the first step in LLMO?
Ask the major assistants how they describe your company and products, then list every inaccurate, missing or outdated point.
