AEO & GEO

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) overlap heavily, but they emphasize different things. AEO is about making a specific page the direct answer an engine extracts for a specific question. GEO is about how generative AI engines mention, describe and cite your brand across a whole topic, including what third-party sources say about you.

Short definitions

  • AEO: Structuring content so answer engines (AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity) pull a direct answer from it. See what AEO is.
  • GEO: Increasing the frequency, prominence and accuracy of your brand in AI-generated answers. See what GEO is.

Where they differ in practice

Granularity

AEO works question by question. You pick “How does SSO pricing work for a 200-seat team?” and build the best answer passage on the web for it.

GEO works topic by topic. You ask, “When buyers ask any AI engine about identity security for mid-market companies, are we on the list, and are we described correctly?” The answer depends on dozens of prompts and the sources behind them.

Where the work happens

AEO is largely on your own site: answer-first copy, question headings, tables, schema, crawl access.

GEO adds work outside your site: review platforms, comparison articles, analyst pages, community threads and partner listings. Generative engines often build vendor shortlists from those third-party pages, so a brand with excellent on-site content can still be missing.

What gets measured

AEO success is often binary per question: were you the answer or cited source? GEO success is a distribution: what share of answers mention you, in what position, with what sentiment, against which competitors. The metrics are covered in the most important KPIs for GEO.

Where they are the same

Both depend on:

  • Pages that can be crawled, rendered and indexed.
  • Clear, specific, verifiable statements.
  • Structure that makes passages easy to extract.
  • Authority signals: authorship, freshness, corroboration and links.
  • Repeated measurement across engines, because answers vary.

This is why most teams do not split them into two programs. One content plan, one technical backlog and one measurement framework serves both.

How to decide where to focus first

Competitors appear on AI shortlists and you do notGEO: analyze which third-party sources are cited and get onto them
AI engines describe your product inaccuratelyGEO: fix consistency across your site and third-party profiles
You have little content for buyer questionsAEO: build question-led pages first

Role-by-role view

  • CMOs: Treat AEO and GEO as one line item: “AI search visibility.” Ask for share of voice against named competitors and AI-referred pipeline, not a list of tactics.
  • SEO managers and agencies: AEO maps closely to work you already do. GEO adds prompt tracking, citation source analysis and digital PR aimed at the sources engines cite. The GEO playbook for agencies covers packaging both.
  • Product marketers: GEO is where positioning lives. Engines repeat the category and differentiators that appear most consistently across the web.

One page, both disciplines: an example

Take a product page for a secrets management tool.

The AEO view asks: does this page directly answer “How do I rotate API keys automatically?” in its opening, with clear steps an engine can quote? Is FAQ content present for follow-ups such as supported vaults and pricing model?

The GEO view asks: when someone prompts “best secrets management tools for Kubernetes,” is the brand named at all? Which sources did the engine cite to build that list? Do those sources describe the product correctly, and does the brand’s own site state its positioning clearly enough to be repeated?

The fixes overlap. Clearer product facts help both. But GEO adds work the AEO view would miss: reaching the review site, comparison article or community thread that the engine relied on for the shortlist. That is the practical reason to run them together.

Terminology note

You will also see LLMO, AI SEO, AI search optimization and generative search optimization. These are largely synonyms. The labels matter less than agreeing internally on scope: question-level answers, brand-level visibility, or both.

For a broader comparison with traditional search, read GEO vs SEO. GrackerAI is built as a combined AEO and GEO platform for B2B SaaS, which reflects how most teams now run the work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hire for AEO or GEO?

Hire for the program, not the label. Look for someone who can do question research, write answer-first content, fix technical access and run multi-engine measurement. Job titles such as 'AEO/GEO marketing manager' reflect this.

Is LLMO or AI SEO different from GEO?

Mostly no. LLMO (large language model optimization), AI SEO and AI search optimization are other names for the same work. Use whichever term your buyers and stakeholders recognize.

Which matters more for B2B SaaS?

Both. AEO wins individual high-intent questions, such as pricing or integration queries. GEO decides whether you appear on AI-generated vendor shortlists, which is often the bigger pipeline lever.
