AEO & GEO

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and publishing content so that answer engines, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants, use it as the direct answer to a user’s question. Instead of competing for a blue link, you compete to be the quoted, summarized or cited source.

Why AEO exists

Search used to return ten links and leave the reading to the user. Answer engines read for the user. They retrieve a handful of pages, extract the parts that answer the question, and write a response, often with a few source links attached.

That changes what “winning” means. A page can rank well and still be left out of the answer, and a page on a smaller site can be cited if it states the answer more clearly than anyone else. For B2B SaaS, the stakes are higher because buyers now ask assistants for shortlists (“best SIEM for a mid-size healthcare company”) and the brands in that answer get the first look.

The term AEO predates large language models. It was first used for featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice search. The same principles now apply to generative engines, which is why AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are often used together.

What AEO work actually involves

AEO is not a single tactic. It is a set of habits applied to the pages that answer your buyers’ questions.

1. Question research

Start with the questions buyers really ask. Good sources include Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools queries, People Also Ask boxes, sales call notes, support tickets, Reddit threads and review sites. Write them down in natural language, the way someone would type them into ChatGPT.

2. Answer-first content

Each target question should have a page or section where the first 40 to 60 words answer it directly. Depth comes after. Answer engines tend to extract a self-contained passage, so the passage needs to make sense without the paragraphs around it.

3. Extractable structure

Use headings phrased as questions, short paragraphs, numbered steps, comparison tables and definition sentences (“X is a Y that does Z”). These formats are easy for a model to lift without misreading.

4. Structured data and technical access

Schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Organization, Article) helps engines understand what a page is. Technical basics matter even more: the page must be crawlable, indexable, rendered server-side where possible, and not blocked for the AI crawlers you want to be cited by. Google states there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal indexing and snippet eligibility, while OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot must be allowed for pages to appear in ChatGPT search answers.

5. Authority and corroboration

Engines prefer facts they can confirm in more than one place. Being described consistently on review sites, analyst pages, comparison articles and community threads makes your own claims more likely to be repeated.

6. Measurement

Track a fixed set of prompts across engines and record mentions, citations, position in the answer and sentiment. See what citation rate is and how to measure share of voice in AI answers.

AEO checklist for a single page

Use this before publishing any page you want answer engines to cite:

  • The H1 or an H2 matches a real buyer question.
  • The first paragraph answers it in 40 to 60 words, with no preamble.
  • Key facts (pricing model, integrations, limits, supported platforms) are stated in plain sentences, not only in images or tabs.
  • At least one list, table or step sequence summarizes the answer.
  • Claims are specific and, where numbers are used, sourced.
  • Relevant schema is present and valid.
  • The page is indexable, server-rendered and allowed for search-focused AI crawlers.
  • The page has an author, a date and an update date.
  • Internal links connect it to related questions and your main product or category page.

Who AEO matters to

  • CMOs and marketing leaders: AI answers now shape vendor shortlists. If your brand is missing or described wrongly, pipeline suffers before it shows up in any funnel report.
  • SEO managers and agencies: Most of your existing skills transfer. The new work is prompt research, multi-engine monitoring and off-site citation analysis.
  • Product marketers: Answer engines repeat positioning. Clear, consistent statements about category, use cases and differentiators across your site and third-party profiles directly affect how you are described.

Common AEO mistakes

  1. Burying the answer. Long intros push the actual answer below the passage an engine extracts.
  2. Hiding facts in UI. Pricing in a toggle, specs in a PDF or features in an image are hard to extract.
  3. Treating it as a schema project. Markup helps, but it does not compensate for vague content.
  4. Measuring one engine once. Answers vary by engine and from run to run. Track a fixed prompt set repeatedly and report averages.
  5. Ignoring third-party sources. Many answers cite review sites, forums and comparison posts more than vendor sites.

Getting started

Pick 20 to 50 buyer questions, check how each engine answers them today, and note who gets cited. Then rewrite or create the pages that should answer those questions, fix any crawl or rendering issues, and re-check monthly. The answer engine optimization guide covers the full program, and the free AI visibility checker gives a quick baseline. Platforms such as GrackerAI automate the monitoring across up to 10 engines once you need it at scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO, because answer engines still need to crawl, index and trust your pages. The difference is the goal: SEO aims for a ranked link, while AEO aims to be the quoted or cited answer.

Who should own AEO in a B2B SaaS company?

Usually the SEO or content lead, with product marketing supplying the facts and positioning that answers depend on. CMOs should own the reporting, because AI answers shape shortlists before buyers ever visit a site.

Does AEO only apply to AI chatbots?

No. The term predates generative AI and also covers featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants. Today most AEO work targets AI Overviews, AI Mode and chat assistants because that is where buyers increasingly ask questions.

How do I check whether my brand appears in AI answers today?

Run your most important buyer questions through the main engines and record whether you are mentioned or cited. A free tool such as the GrackerAI AI visibility checker can do a first pass across engines.
