Search Everywhere Optimization
Search everywhere optimization is SEO reframed for every place people search: Google, AI assistants, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, review sites and app stores.
What is Search Everywhere Optimization?
Search everywhere optimization is the practice of making a brand discoverable wherever its audience searches for information: Google and Bing, AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, review sites, app stores and communities. It reframes the “E” in SEO from “engine” to “everywhere,” treating every platform with a search box or recommendation feed as a search surface.
The framing was popularized by Rand Fishkin of SparkToro in a May 2025 post titled “It’s Still SEO: Search Everywhere Optimization.” He argued against new acronyms such as AIO, AEO and GEO, and credited Ashley Liddell of Deviation with coining the phrase. Agencies have since adopted it widely, though it remains a framing, not a formal method.
How it works
The core idea is audience-first rather than engine-first:
- Find where buyers look. Use audience research, customer interviews and referral data to list the platforms your buyers use to research problems and vendors.
- Learn each platform’s ranking logic. YouTube rewards watch time and relevance; Reddit rewards community fit; review sites reward volume and recency of reviews; AI engines reward clear, corroborated facts.
- Create native content. A Reddit answer, a LinkedIn post and a YouTube walkthrough on the same topic each need a different format.
- Connect the signals. Consistent brand facts across platforms help both people and AI models form an accurate picture.
From SEO to AEO and GEO
Classic SEO concentrated on one or two web search engines. Social, video and community work sat with other teams. AI search blurred that split, because AI engines cite and summarize content from many of those platforms. A Perplexity or AI Overview answer to “best vulnerability scanner for startups” may draw on a vendor page, a comparison article, a Reddit thread and a YouTube review.
| Era | Main search surfaces | Typical owner |
|---|---|---|
| Classic SEO | Google, Bing | SEO team |
| Search everywhere | Web search, AI assistants, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, reviews | SEO, content, social and PR together |
What carries over: keyword and intent research, quality content and authority signals. What changed: visibility depends on presence in many places, and the places AI engines cite become part of your SEO footprint.
What to do about it
- Map citations. Run your key buyer prompts in AI engines and log which domains they cite. Those domains are your priority platforms.
- Assign owners. Give each priority platform a named owner with a monthly content target.
- Seed honest community presence. Have product experts answer real questions on Reddit or forums under their own names, disclosing affiliation.
- Invest in reviews. Ask satisfied customers for reviews on the sites your category’s buyers use.
- Repurpose with care. Turn one research piece into a blog post, a short video, a LinkedIn carousel and a community answer, each written natively.
- Measure across surfaces. Combine web analytics, AI citation tracking, platform analytics and self-reported attribution (“How did you hear about us?”).
Common mistakes
- Spreading too thin. Ten neglected platforms do less than three done well.
- Cross-posting identical content. Each platform has its own norms and audiences notice copy-paste.
- Treating it as a rebrand only. Renaming the SEO team does nothing unless budget and ownership change too.

Frequently asked questions
Who coined search everywhere optimization?
SparkToro co-founder Rand Fishkin popularized the phrase in a May 2025 post arguing that marketers should keep the SEO acronym instead of inventing new ones, and he credits Ashley Liddell of the agency Deviation with coining it. There is no independent record of the first use, so treat the attribution as Fishkin's account.
How is it different from GEO or AEO?
GEO and AEO focus on generative and answer engines. Search everywhere optimization is broader: it includes AI engines but also social platforms, video, communities, marketplaces and review sites. Many practitioners see GEO as one part of a search everywhere strategy.
Which platforms matter most for B2B SaaS?
It depends on where your buyers research. For many B2B SaaS and cybersecurity buyers that means Google, AI assistants, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, G2 or similar review sites, analyst content and GitHub for developer tools. Audience research, not habit, should set the list.
