How do I get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
You get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT by being easy to retrieve and easy to recommend. That means allowing OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site, publishing pages that state plainly what you do, for whom and how you compare, and appearing on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites for your category: review sites, comparison articles, forums and analyst lists.
Where ChatGPT gets the brands it mentions
ChatGPT builds answers from two sources, and each needs a different approach.
| Source | How it works | What you can influence |
|---|---|---|
| Model knowledge | What the model learned during training | Long-term brand footprint across the open web |
| Live retrieval (ChatGPT search) | Pages fetched at answer time from OpenAI’s index and search partners | Crawl access, page clarity, third-party coverage |
For commercial prompts such as “best SOC 2 automation tools for startups”, ChatGPT often searches the web and then summarizes what it finds. That is good news, because retrieval responds to work you do now. Training data only changes when OpenAI ships a new model.
For a deeper look at how engines pick sources, see how AI engines choose which sources to cite and our guide to how AI engines cite content.
Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can reach your pages
OpenAI documents its crawlers on its bots page. The one that matters for being shown in ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that sites which block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is the training crawler and is a separate decision.
Checklist:
- robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot (check your CDN or WAF bot rules too, not just robots.txt)
- Key pages render their main content in HTML, not only after client-side JavaScript
- Product, pricing, comparison and documentation pages are not behind logins or cookie walls
- Your sitemap is current and submitted to Bing Webmaster Tools, since Bing data feeds several AI products
Step 2: Publish pages ChatGPT can quote
ChatGPT tends to lift short, self-contained statements. Pages that bury the answer under brand storytelling rarely get used. For each core buyer question, publish a page that:
- Opens with a direct answer in the first two or three sentences
- Names your category in plain words (“GrackerAI is an AEO and GEO platform for B2B SaaS”), not only a slogan
- States who the product is for, with company size, industry or use case
- Includes concrete facts: integrations, deployment model, pricing model, compliance standards
- Uses descriptive H2s that mirror real questions
- Compares you honestly with named alternatives
The pages that most often influence brand recommendations are category pages, “X vs Y” comparisons, alternatives pages, use-case pages and pricing pages. Our guide on how to write comparison pages AI engines cite goes into detail.
Step 3: Show up where ChatGPT already looks
For most category prompts, ChatGPT cites more third-party pages than vendor pages. Run your target prompts, note every cited URL, and you will get a target list. Typical sources include:
- Review platforms such as G2, Capterra and TrustRadius
- “Best X tools” roundups from industry publications
- Reddit and niche community threads
- Analyst and association lists
- Wikipedia and Wikidata for established brands
- YouTube videos with descriptive titles and transcripts
The work here is PR, partnerships and community participation, not link building for its own sake. Ask customers for reviews that mention specific use cases, pitch inclusion to roundups that are already cited, and answer real questions in communities under a disclosed identity.
Step 4: Measure with a fixed prompt set
ChatGPT answers vary between runs, users and dates, so one screenshot proves little. Build a set of 30 to 100 buyer prompts across category, comparison, alternative and use-case questions, then run them on a schedule and track:
- Mention rate: share of runs where your brand appears
- Position: where you appear in lists or recommendations
- Citation rate: share of runs where your own URL is cited
- Sentiment and accuracy: whether ChatGPT describes you correctly
See how to measure share of voice in AI answers for the method. For a quick baseline, the free AI visibility checker shows how ChatGPT and other engines currently describe your brand.

Common mistakes
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident. Blanket “block AI bots” rules at the CDN level often catch search crawlers along with training crawlers.
- Vague positioning. If your homepage says “the platform for modern teams”, ChatGPT cannot place you in a category.
- Only optimizing your own site. Your pages rarely carry a recommendation alone. Third-party corroboration is what makes ChatGPT confident enough to name you.
- Inconsistent facts. Different pricing or feature claims across your site, G2 and partner pages lead to hedged or wrong descriptions.
- Judging from one run. Measure trends across many runs before changing strategy.
What to do this month
- List 30 buyer prompts and run each in ChatGPT with search on.
- Record which brands and URLs appear.
- Fix crawl access and rewrite your three most important pages answer-first.
- Pick the five most-cited third-party pages and plan how to earn a place on them.
- Re-run the same prompts every week and compare averages.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get mentioned in ChatGPT?
Changes that affect live search results, such as new pages or fixed crawler access, can show up within weeks once pages are crawled. Changes to what the underlying model knows from training only arrive with new model versions, which can take months.
Can I pay to be mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
No. Organic answers are not for sale, and any sponsored placement would be labeled separately from the answer. The reliable route is retrieval and reputation: crawlable pages, clear positioning and third-party coverage.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor but not me?
Usually because the competitor appears on more of the sources ChatGPT retrieves for that prompt, such as comparison articles, review sites and community threads, or because its own pages state its category and use cases more clearly.
Does ranking on Google help with ChatGPT?
Indirectly. ChatGPT search uses its own crawler and third-party search providers rather than Google, but pages that are crawlable, authoritative and well structured tend to perform in both.
