TL;DR

Tata Consultancy Services is reportedly in discussions to acquire digital marketing agency R/GA for an estimated $300 million. This potential acquisition highlights the increasing trend of IT and consulting firms expanding into the martech and creative services space. The deal could significantly impact the digital advertising landscape, following similar moves by Accenture and Deloitte.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Talks to Acquire R/GA

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is reportedly in talks to acquire R/GA, a digital marketing agency, from Interpublic Group (IPG). The Wall Street Journal reported that the asking sale price is rumored to be around US$300 million. Neither company has commented on the rumor.

R/GA's Background and Challenges

R/GA became part of IPG in 2001. The agency has faced difficulties, including laying off 15% of its US staff last year. According to the WSJ report, R/GA has been hampered by executive turnover, client losses, and reduced ad spending by tech clients. Its revenue was approximately US$200 million last year, a 20% decrease from the previous year. R/GA's client list includes Google Android, Fujitsu, United Colours of Benetton, Verizon, and Nike.

Consulting Firms Expanding into Marketing and Media

Consulting groups like Accenture and Deloitte have been expanding into the marketing and media space. In 2022, Deloitte Digital acquired three specialist firms in martech and CX: Venntifact, Blended Digital, and New Republique, and also bought creative agency, Heat. Accenture has acquired digital agencies and owns martech player The Lumery, as well as creative agencies like Droga5 and The Monkeys.

TCS's Strategic Moves

TCS has been making moves into the digital and advertising agency space. TCS appointed former Droga5 CEO, Andrew Essex, as senior managing partner of TCS Interactive last year. TCS reported revenue of approximately US$29.7 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2023, with a full-year order book value of $34.1 billion. The company has 614,795 employees globally.
