BPF+ is a comprehensive packet filter framework that combines high-level expressiveness with strong performance. It achieves this by compiling a high-level language into a highly efficient native implementation.

It employs a novel optimization technique known as "redundant predicate elimination" to reduce computation by taking advantage of semantic redundancies found across multiple, independent filters. BPF+ is an evolution of the BSD packet filter (BPF) and includes several components: a filter program translator, a byte code optimizer, a byte code safety verifier, and a just-in-time assembler that converts byte codes into efficient native code.

It offers a programmable selection criterion for classifying or selecting packets from a packet stream in a generic and reusable manner. This makes it ideal for applications such as network monitoring and intrusion detection, which require both flexibility and high performance. BPF+ has demonstrated performance that is comparable to leading packet filter architectures and surpasses that of hand-coded filters written in C.
