China's Singles Day: Major Discounts and Consumer Spending Trends
TL;DR
Singles' Day Sales and Consumer Behavior
China's Singles' Day shopping festival, initiated by Alibaba in 2009, has evolved into an extended discount campaign. This year's sales began as early as October 9, ahead of the traditional November 11 date. Syntun reported that by October 31, the gross value for Singles’ Day had exceeded 1 trillion yuan ($140 billion).
Despite the sales event, consumers are more cautious. Alice Zhang, a marketer, reduced her spending by half due to pay cuts. Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING Bank, noted that "Confidence remains quite downbeat among households". Shaun Rein, managing director at China Market Research Group, stated the early launch was an attempt by e-commerce players like Alibaba and JD.com to boost business.
Consumer Trends and Retail Strategies
Consumers are increasingly focused on value and necessities. Yaling Jiang, an independent Chinese consumer analyst, observed "consumer fatigue" and weaker discounts. Sonia Song, a freelance media worker, researches bargains on platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu to compare prices across e-commerce sites like Taobao and JD.com.
The Chinese government's rebates for trading in appliances and vehicles also impact Singles' Day sales. Bain & Company reported that e-commerce giants are expanding online sales in other countries. Taobao, owned by Alibaba, is running promotions in 20 countries. With the U.S. ending its "de minimis" tariff exemption, Chinese companies are focusing on Southeast Asian markets. Jacob Cooke, CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies, suggests beauty and health products will perform well.
