OpenAI to Offer Free ChatGPT Go Access in India

OpenAI is providing free ChatGPT Go access to users in India for one year, starting November 4. This initiative coincides with their first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru. The offer is available to both new and existing subscribers.

ChatGPT Go Details

ChatGPT Go is a mid-tier subscription service from OpenAI, designed to provide users with enhanced access to AI tools at a lower cost. The subscription includes higher message limits and increased daily image generations. It also provides extended memory for more personalized conversations. The plan is backed by GPT-5, OpenAI's latest AI model.

India as a Key Market

India is OpenAI's second-largest market. The number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled in the first month after launch. This prompted OpenAI to expand ChatGPT Go to approximately 90 global markets.

Statements from OpenAI

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, stated that the move builds on the adoption and creativity the company has witnessed since its initial rollout. He added, "Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI." Sam Altman, OpenAI founder and CEO, highlighted India as the company’s fastest-growing market.

OpenAI's Strategy

The offer aligns with OpenAI’s ‘India-first’ approach. It also supports the IndiaAI Mission, a national initiative to build AI capacity and infrastructure. OpenAI is collaborating with civil society groups, educational platforms, and government programs to promote inclusive innovation. This is intended to ensure that AI literacy and adoption extend beyond metro cities. OpenAI has announced plans to open offices in New Delhi and Bengaluru.
