Langworthy and Stefanik Push Northern Border Protection Legislation
Congressman Langworthy Introduces Act to Update Northern Border Threat Analysis
House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik joined Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) and Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-NY) in introducing the Northern Border Security and Staffing Reform Act. This act directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to update the Northern Border Threat Analysis. Officials have noted that staffing shortages at northern ports of entry are a significant concern due to officer retirements and recruitment challenges.
“I am honored to be the co-lead on this critical legislation to strengthen security along our Northern Border. With outdated threat assessments and a looming staffing crisis at our northern ports of entry, it is clear that urgent action is needed to protect our communities and our country," stated Rep. Langworthy. "The Northern Border hasn’t seen a comprehensive threat analysis since 2017, and our strategy hasn’t been updated in over six years.”
The last Northern Border Threat Analysis was conducted in 2017, and the strategy has not been updated since 2018, despite growing concerns about border security and staffing.
NY Congressman Introduces Bill for Increased Protections at Northern Border
Rep. Nick Langworthy proposed the Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act, which mandates the DHS to issue an annual threat analysis for the northern border. The agency would also have to brief Congress and update its strategy for protecting the northern border against potential terrorist threats.
Since October, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has stopped more than 170 people on the terrorist watch list at entry points. "The Biden Administration’s neglect has left us completely vulnerable," Langworthy stated. He highlighted that CBP has apprehended 16,750 individuals at the northern border since October, marking an increase of over 2,620 from the previous year.
Congressman Langworthy's Legislative Efforts Against Sanctuary Cities
Congressman Nick Langworthy introduced the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act of 2025 to block federal funding for jurisdictions that restrict local law enforcement from sharing immigration status information with federal immigration enforcement. This legislation aims to hold sanctuary cities accountable for undermining federal immigration enforcement.
“The violence we are seeing happen in LA right now is a cautionary tale for New York," Langworthy remarked. He emphasized the necessity for state and local governments to comply with federal immigration enforcement efforts. The act aims to protect law enforcement and enhance cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Government of Canada Strengthens Border Security
The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, introduced the Strong Borders Act to strengthen Canada's border security laws. This act aims to combat organized crime, illegal fentanyl trafficking, and enhance the immigration system while protecting Canadians' rights.
Key provisions include amendments to the Customs Act to secure borders against drug trafficking and smuggling, enhancements to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) capabilities, and improvements to the asylum claim process. The act establishes a framework for rapid control of precursor chemicals used to produce illicit drugs.
