The Bastille Hardening Program: Enhancing Operating System Security

The Bastille Hardening program effectively 'locks down' an operating system by proactively configuring it to enhance security and reduce its vulnerability to attacks. Additionally, Bastille can evaluate the current state of a system's hardening, providing detailed reports on each of the security settings it manages. Currently, Bastille supports various distributions, including Red Hat (Fedora Core, Enterprise, and Numbered/Classic), SUSE, Debian, Gentoo, Mandrake, and HP-UX.

It also supports Mac OS X

Bastille focuses on allowing the system's user or administrator to decide precisely how to enhance the security of the operating system. In its default hardening mode, it interactively poses questions to the user, provides explanations for each question, and creates a policy based on the user's responses.

Applying the Policy to the System

In its assessment mode, it generates a report designed to educate the user about the available security settings and to inform them about which settings have been tightened. Bastille has pioneered efforts to educate users about security, enabling them to make informed and balanced choices. Many users have found Bastille's secondary educational goal to be just as valuable as its primary objective of system hardening. This has led some organizations to incorporate an interactive Bastille hardening session into their training programs for new system administrators. In this context, Bastille can allow t
